Simonstown, with Glencairn in the foreground. Named after the Governor, Simon Van Der Stel, in1687, Simonstown is steeped in naval history and even served as The Royal Navy`s South African base. Nowadays though, it is not only naval, but also headquarters to The False Bay Yacht Club.
On the main road in town (below), there are still many buildings which are over 150 years old, as well as The Toy Museum. Plenty of souvenir and craft shops are to be found and just outside of town, heading North, one finds the gemstone factory. |
The town is also sheltered from the winter North-Easterly winds and even has a waterfall that can be seen from almost anywhere in town.
The bay is reputed to be the deepest part of the bay, False Bay, but also hosts safe beaches and also popular beaches like Boulders and Seaforth where the Jackass Penguins can be seen, in their multitudes.
A popular place of relaxation is around Jubilee Square, in the heart of town. Here one finds the statue in honor and memory of one of Simonstown`s most famous characters, namely, the Great Dane, Just Nuisance (below). He befriended British sailors during World War Two, and formally ranked as an Able Seaman, and was buried with full military honors. |
