Kalk Bay, the enchanting little harbour and resort, as seen from Elsie's Peak.
Kalk Bay, named after the lime kilns of the 17th century, where seashells that were collected along the shores were burnt to produce lime. Hence the name- Kalk,Lime.
The harbor itself (below), being the soul of the Bay is filled with fishing vessels that can be seen out on the sea from early in the mornings already. Like the early bird catching the worm, these fishermen are out catching their catches, esp. snoek over the months of June and July, when they are very busy. The Kalk Bay mountain range is cut through by a labyrinth of underground chambers with strangely fascinating names such as `Light & Gloom` and `Creepy Corridor`. Also plenty of mountain walking routes, some going through The Spes Bona Forest in the chasm between two mountain sides as well as the Amphitheater. |
